My father’s mother’s name was Florence. She was a beautiful woman of Swedish heritage born to the town of Strandquist, Minnesota. From her I inherited a camel fur trench coat, a floral checkbook cover, a jewelry box from Kashmir, two pocket dictionaries, and a love of family, food and Mexican train. I was only able to spend the first eight years of my life with her, but in that time she influenced me enough for a lifetime. So, for my part, this blog is dedicated to the spark and spirit of my Grandma Florence, and the beauty of her life.
As for me today, my name is Paige Westberg. I’m in my early twenties. I’m a photographer who dabbles in illustration, fiber arts, graphic design and drawing really tall letters. I currently reside in Savannah, Georgia though I was born and raised in the great state of Arizona.
Also, I currently live in a room with a popcorn ceiling, in which I frequently see bearded men, whom I promptly draw in my journal reserved for “purposely perfect drawings.”
Twice a year I get a birthday and Christmas card from my Grammie. Written front to back in neat cursive handwriting, she writes about various topics. Sometimes, she writes about how she can’t believe that I am another year older. Sometimes she writes about how proud of me she is for pursuing what I love. And sometimes she writes about how many inches of snow the front yard is buried under. But without fail, she always signs her letters with the words Love and Hugs, Grammie. Mildred Kline, or Millie, is my Grammie and it is with love and hugs that I dedicate this blog to her.
My name is Rebecca Kline and I am twenty-one years old. I’m from the great state of Texas, but am currently living in Savannah, GA. I guess you could say that my main title is “photographer” or, “that girl who takes pictures”, but I also go by daughter, friend, aunt, musician, dancer, and occasionally, awesome brownie maker. Floral patterns, scarfs, and cupcakes are some of my favorite things, and occasionally I talk in random accents. Also, I am addicted to Words With Friends.
My name is Katharine Lucas, and I’m twenty years old. I grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, and am a writing student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. When I’m not in either of those two places, I spend my time at my dad’s farm in his hometown of Florence, South Carolina. I suspect my connection to Florence is the main reason Paige and Rebecca asked me to join the staff of Florence & Millie.
Luckily, Paige and Rebecca also know my love of cooking and asked me to share it with you. I’ve always loved making food, but my recent diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and celiac disease has made it more of a lifestyle. I’m forced to get a little more creative, but I can’t say I mind. A lot of my recipes are carb counted and health conscious, but I love making food I can’t always indulge in for other people. I call it vicarious eating.
I like a lot of other things too, and I might write about them on occasion. Traveling, sewing, reading, biking and being outdoors are some of my favorite things.
Also, I drink a lot of caffeine.
My name is William Santiago, and I’m the oldest staff member at twenty-three. I originally hail from Florida, but I currently reside in the gloriously humid city of Savannah, Georgia. I met Paige and Rebecca at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and I have joined Florence & Millie to add my distinctly male voice to a fantastic, female staff. I’m here to remind men that style is not just for the ladies.
I believe that a well-dressed man is more than a clotheshorse; he exudes confidence, class, and conscientiousness. I steer clear of trends, and my aesthetic can be described as classic, neutral, textured, and simple. Menswear matters, and I’m excited to share my perspective here.
Also, my favorite color is brown – like my coffee and me.
Hi! My name is Baille Younkman, ringing in at twenty years young. I’m from Columbus, Ohio but currently attend the Savannah College of Art and Design with a focus in fashion design. My interest and passion for fashion (see what I did there?) are rooted from my ongoing enthusiasm for all areas of fine art and design. I am quite determined to pursue my art and design career while sharing my daily inspiration on the way! I hope readers are just as excited, moved and inspired by the features on Florence & Millie as we are!
Also, I make a lot (A LOT) of weird noises, I urge you to imagine them while reading.
My name is Taylor Skillen, and I am twenty years old. I am from the small town of Middlebury, Indiana, and am currently studying Fibers at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Paige and Rebecca have so graciously asked me to join the staff of Florence & Millie to add a little DIY magic to the mix.
My aesthetic is greatly influenced by my belief that beauty is found in the simplicity of everyday. A lot of what inspires me comes from the idea that space is which we live and work is often a reflection of the life we live. Some of my favorite things include watercolor sketches, legal pads, and big comfy beds after long days.
Also, I love yarn – one of many the things I have in common with both grandmas and cats.
My name is Derrick Riley. I’m twenty-one and a Kansas City native. As an architecture student, I’m studying at SCAD like the rest of these folks. I’m a sucker for simple things done exceptionally well – everything from BBQ, a good pair of jeans, an old oak floor, and a great cup of coffee; I hold immense appreciation toward craft, especially that of the Japanese and good ol’ hard-working Americans.
Fashion, industrial, and graphic design are equally important in architecture as architecture is itself. Creativity doesn’t happen in a vacuum, so hopefully you’ll find the things we post inspirational in the things you create. I don’t post frequently, but I hope you find every bit I do enlightening.
Also, cat videos are my weakness.
